How good or bad is coffee for you?

Caffeine might be good for your heart because of high concentration of polyphenols, but in certain individuals, it can cause anxiety and jitters. That is because some people are ‘fast metabolizers’ while others are ‘slow metabolizers’. How many cups of coffee are good for you? GenePlanet helps you find out how many cups of coffee you should drink per day.

We've come to rely on a warm, steaming cup of coffee to wake us up and give us the energy boost for starting the day. Caffeine, the main ingredient in coffee, is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Studies have shown that the benefits of moderate coffee consumption in adults outweigh the risks of most potential medical conditions that have been considered. But, how many cups of coffee should you drink a day?

The answer lies in knowing the specific gene. The enzyme synthesized from the CYP1A2 gene is responsible for 95% of caffeine metabolism process and therefore determines how fast we metabolize this substance. Researchers have shown that people who metabolize caffeine slower are much more susceptible to complications associated with high blood pressure and have an increased risk of heart attack if ingesting large quantities of coffee. Therefore, slow caffeine metabolizers should not drink more than one cup of coffee a day. Contrary, fast metabolizers have actually reduced the risk of a heart attack if they consumed at least one cup of coffee per day compared to not consuming any coffee.

Slow caffeine metabolizers should not drink more than one cup of coffee a day.

The positive effect of coffee is lowering a feeling of tiredness. However, coffee is also known to make blood vessels narrow. This increases blood pressure and could lead to cardiovascular disease risk. Only genetic analysis can reveal whether you are metabolising caffeine slowly or fast and provide you with the most appropriated tool for improving the quality of your life.
